Well here we are in the Hafren Forest, Mid-Wales, checking out a ramble for next year. This circular 8 mile 2+ route on Forestry roads goes up to the source of the River Severn.
We checked half of it yesterday and just got wet from the incessant rain. Today we covered the other half of the circuit. This started with a very pleasant ford. Liz wanted to know how deep it was before she Trampered through so off I went on my bike. I got half way when I hit a stone and the bike slid one way and I went the other – landing up lying in the river. Well, the things we do for the good of the Disabled Ramblers!
Sorry there is no photo – the camera was in my pocket – it has dried out OK so the treasurer doesn’t need to worry about a claim
We are checking out the Ystwyth Trail (an old railway line) tomorrow – Hope I don’t meet a ghost train!
John

I am a 65 year old disabled gentleman who would love to go to the source of the river severn in Plynlimon.
I have drove round and round many times looking for a place to park with easy access to the Source footpath, all to no avail.
Although I can walk short distances very slowly there does not appear to be any way that I can access this footpath.
When I parked in the Hafod picnic area, I believe its about 6 miles to the River source?
Is there anywhere where I can park close to enable me to get to the source…I understand that there are private roads.
Thank you
Hi David, The roads are owned by the Forestry Commission. They might give you permission to drive to the nearest point to the source. I suggest that you contact: Jim Ralph, Local Area Manager, 0300 068 0300. e-mail: jim.ralph@naturalresourceswales.gov.uk

Well done, John & Liz. What devotion to duty! Liz was quite right to insist the depth of the ford was tested before she took on the torrent!! Some of us forget that in surveying possible ramble routes there are some uncomfortable experiences , but this work is vital if the group are to make it safe for us all to enjoy each subsequent ramble. Glad to hear the camera dried out OK but what about John???
