Dorothy Dickens

    21st January 2022

Funeral arrangements: Funeral at Mintlyn Crematorium, Lynn Road, Kings Lynn PE32 1HB.  23rd February, 12.15pm.

Dorothy joined the Disabled Ramblers way back in 2000 and gave many years’ service on the Committee; some of you might remember her as our long-serving Membership Secretary or on one of the many rambles she led jointly with Tony,  her husband.

Dorothy was awarded Life Membership in 2014 when she retired from the Committee and in 2015, together with Tony, was awarded the Wenman Trophy for outstanding Service to the Disabled Ramblers.

Our thoughts are with Tony at this sad time. John & Liz

Very sad news. Dorothy was a lovely person. She did wonders taking over the admin from Robin and getting the admin side of DR into a workable form in the early days before she handed over to Jan and me. I remember casually saying to her that I could help with admin, and it wasn’t long before she had roped me in to help as she was kept very busy by all that she was doing for DR. Kind regards, Rhiannon

Tony, I am so sorry. Dorothy was always there to help new members with a  friendly word. She will be sorely missed. Sadly yours, Jackie Jonas

Please send our sincere best wishes to Tony and family. Sincerely David & Christine Drage

So sad to hear of Dorothy’s passing. Bob Mclellan

Dorothy and Tony have been valuable active members of the Disabled Ramblers serving on the committee and also leading rambles until Dorothy was diagnosed with cancer four and a half years ago.

The last tour they lead, which we remember well, was the successful tour of rambles in Pembrokeshire in May 2015. One spectacular coastal ramble was over an active firing range used for tank training for which they sought permission.  Then another spectacular coastal ramble provided views of Stacks Rocks and St Govern’s Head with lunch time entertainment of a cliff side helicopter rescue training session. Most enjoyable.

Dorothy loved her TGA Supersport and only changed over to a 4 wheel Tramper when they updated their motorhome and the ‘garage’ was not quite wide enough.

Dorothy will be sadly missed by many whose lives she touched with kindness and concern. Always welcoming and chatting with new members.

Our thoughts are with Tony and family with this sad news. Linda & Peter

We first met Dorothy and Tony by chance on the way up to Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland almost 20 years ago. (that ramble features in many of the lists of Best Walks in UK and we are running it again this year!). Jill was using Hugh’s golf buggae and Dorothy introduced us to Disabled Ramblers and to all terrain vehicles. After that we shared many rambles across the country with Jill and Dorothy  had a good natter whilst Tony and Hugh followed on Bikes. Dorothy was a very determined lady who did sterling work for disabled ramblers( I think as Secretary but maybe John you could check that out) until forced to stop. Many thanks for your company Dorothy and your example. Sympathies to Tony.  Jill & Hugh Williamson

Dorothy Dickens was a stalwart member of Disabled Ramblers. Despite diminishing health she led many rambles with her husband Tony (later Treasurer and then Chairman) and took on Membership Secretary for many years. She was always welcoming and friendly – sometimes to an extraordinary degree – but her warmth and interest were real. She did much to maintain enthusiasm for DR during the lean times. Her battles with painful illness were constant so that doctors and nurses marvelled at her stoicism and courage, especially towards the end. It was a privilege to know her, and our sincere condolences go to Tony who so gallantly supported her throughout. Stuart & Jan Kemp (24.1.22)

I would just like to send my thoughts to Tony.  Sue Geary

So sorry to hear of Dorothy’s passing, our thoughts are with Tony at this time. Jude & Carole

We have known Dorothy and Tony for many years as members of Disabled Ramblers – at a guess – since the 1990’s – enjoying the rambles together.

‘Once upon  a time’ D.R Committee meetings were around our kitchen table and Dorothy was an enthusiastic member with lots to contribute.  It didn’t matter that due to tight space, Dorothy had to use a route to the toilet during meetings via our back door!  Dorothy and Tony often stayed with us to attend meetings and rambles in our area.

Despite having many difficulties of her own,  Dorothy was a very empathetic, caring lady and we are so sad she is no longer with us. Brenda & Keith Harris
